THE SAINTS ALSO CRY
When the saints go marching on, Lord I want to be in the number…………….Many of us sang this song years ago. Some probably still sing it. We want to be called saints but being a SAINT is not always SUGARY.
A young man went to Archbishop Benson Idahosa of blessed memory telling him to pray so that he would get half of the anointing which the great man had. Archbishop Idahosa told him to kneel down and said ‘Oh God, give him trouble. ‘ The man opened his eyes, horrified and said, ‘Sir, I asked for your anointing, not trouble. ‘ The wise archbishop smiled at him with the benefit of his experiences in life and said, ‘Son, I passed through the tunnel of trouble before I emerged into the mountain of glory.’
Insightful words indeed. So true to life. It is wrong to think that being a ‘Saint of God’ exempts you from troubles of life. Sometimes these troubles can rush at you in anger. Chinua Achebe said in one of his books: ‘When trouble comes to your house, you will tell it, ‘there is no seat for you here.’ But trouble will tell you, ‘I came with my own seat.’ In other words, it came prepared to wreak havoc.
Troubles come, but God gives a soothing promise: ‘Many are the afflictions of the righteous but God delivers him from them all (Psalm 34:19)
I have heard people say that crying when disaster strikes makes the devil delighted. So a bereaved or ‘troubled’ person is counselled to bottle pain and almost get sick in the process. But Jesus wept ( John 11:35) so who are you imitating when you ‘seal up your pain?’
Next time you feel like crying, please do. The saints also cry but that does not deprive them of their saintly nature.
