SAVED ALONE
In the 1860s, Horatio Spafford, a friend of the evangelist Dwight L. Moody, lived in Chicago with his wife, Anna, and their five children. The Spafford family belonged to a Presbyterian Church and, by 1860 standards lived an idyllic life, well, that is until 1870 when the Spafford’s only son died of pneumonia. While still reeling from that loss, Chicago’s Great Fire destroyed much of the Spafford family’s assets. Perhaps in hopes of easing the pain of their recent tragedies, in 1873, the Spaffords decided to take a trip to England, where Moody would be preaching, but Horatio was held back due to business, and so, he sent his wife and four daughters ahead of him promising to catch up soon. Then the unthinkable happened, the ship carrying Spafford’s family wrecked. All four of the Spafford’s daughters drowned.
When she reached shore, Anna sent Horatio a cable saying: “Saved alone. What shall I do.” What indeed. As he sailed
across the spot where his little children had just drowned, it is said that Horatio wrote the famous hymn “It Is Well With My Soul.
This story stays on my mind as I write this piece. Very often in the course of our earthly sojourn we chase a lot of things. At a stage of our life it’s all about education. We want to leave secondary school go to the university and become a graduate.
When that is accomplished we desire a good job preferably in an oil company or a bank.
Then that is accomplished and the pull of matrimony beckons. I want to get married; all my mates are married.
That is also achieved then a new craving is born. I want to have children. A marriage is not complete without children. The chidren come and there is a new desire…
I need money to give my children the best in life to live a life of ease and measure up to my mates.
So the race for material possessions begins houses cars clothes and the likes. The eye is not satisfied with seeing; it has to acquire new models come and go, money for always changes hands and the possessions keep coming in…. .
And then the big question: Is that all there is to life? Money, certificates, husband, wife children!
Oh! Money is good. If I did not have it I would not be able to send this message through this device.
But what shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?
What is the benefit of saving yourself from poverty and not saving yourself from hell?
You may acquire all the possessions but when the chips are down; when you stand before God on the last day, you will be SAVED ALONE.
You will not take your certificate( that’s why it’s sometimes buried with a corpse cos it’s of no use anymore) wife, husband, children, houses, cars, money or any other material possession.
You will stand before your maker, SAVED ALONE
Jesus died for you, why not live for him and not the cares of this world which cannot secure you entry into eternity?
You will be saved alone but do not go to heaven alone. Take along with you souls that would have perished in eternal darkness. Tell someone about Jesus like I just did.
God bless you!
