DON’T BURY MY SON
I watched a Christian movie called God’s Compass. A most inspiring story about a couple in danger of losing their son who had a terminal illness at birth. The father of the boy, a doctor was reluctant to name him because the little boy was unlikely to survive. His wife, a woman of faith, looked him squarely in the face and said,
‘Don’t bury my son before God does!’
It was a statement that brought goose pimples to my skin. Such deep words. They gave me so much comfort.
The Holy Spirit revealed to me the depth of meaning in the words.
THE SON can represent anything in your life, both living or non-living that is precious to you.
Many times we bury people before they are dead. We give up on our children, our spouses, other people around us.
We see them as beyond redemption.
Many times we bury our dreams before they die. When we wait for so long for the manifestation, we bury our dreams alive.
We cover up our dreams when they are still breathing and move on to other things. Better things like we think. Things that we can get with the snap of a finger.
Should we do this?
I watched the film with bated breath, wondering what the end will bring.
I watched as the doctor agreed to name his son, REFUSING TO BURY HIM before he took his last breath.
I watched as the son was wheeled to the theatre for emergency surgery.
I watched the looks of hope tinged with fear on the faces of the parents of the boy as their son disappeared into the theatre.
I watched as they prayed to God for a miracle.
I watched as they watched. Not knowing which side of the theatre the doctor was going to come out from. Either from the negative side, to say their son was gone. Or the positive to say he had been healed.
I was still watching when the door opened.
It was on the positive side.
The operation was a success.
And as I heaved a sigh of relief, feeling almost the same joy as the parents, I reflected on the lesson in the film.
I remembered how Jesus turned the tears of the widow of Nain to tears of joy. The situation was hopeless. Her son was on the way to his final resting place. It was time to bury him. But God still gave him new breath(Luke 7:11-15).
So the next time anything or anyone wants to make you abandon those dreams, say like the mother in the film,
‘Do not bury my son before he dies. For God can make even the dead come to life.’
